UWF Aquatic Center

In the spring, second-graders from Ensley, Lipscomb, Ferry Pass, and Scenic Heights got a chance to learn some basic water safety skills at the UWF Aquatic Center. They were joined by volunteers from swim teams like the Greater Pensacola Aquatic Club and Seastars.

This facility has an 82-degree indoor Olympic-sized pool, with 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards. A 25-yard swim test is administered at the shallow end for patrons who want to use the diving boards.

What to Expect

UWF Aquatic Center Ferry Pass Florida is a state-of-the-art aquatic facility located within the University of West Florida campus. It is designed to provide a variety of water activities to the UWF community and the general public.

The facility features a 1,200-foot-long indoor Olympic-sized pool, regulated at 82 degrees year-round, with a depth that ranges from 4 feet, 2 inches in the shallow end to 14 feet, 8 inches in the deep end. Additionally, the pool boasts a large hot tub and a dry sauna.

Several swim programs are offered, including beginner and young-beginner swimming classes, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation course, springboard diving courses, a stroke clinic, and shallow-water water aerobics. In addition, the facility is home to a number of special events, such as “Dive-In Movies” and a challenge biathlon. The best part is that the center has its own bus service, so you can take advantage of this extra option without having to worry about driving. Aquatics

The UWF Aquatic Center features an indoor Olympic-sized pool, regulated at 82 degrees year-round. The deep end is a maximum depth of 14 feet, 8 inches. There are 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards over the deep end of the pool.

The facility is open to the University of West Florida community and the general public for leisure, fitness, and lap swimming opportunities. Guests under 16 years of age must be accompanied by someone at least 18 years old, who can supervise a maximum of two under-aged swimmers.

Second-grade students from four Escambia County schools attended a Water and Youth Safety Day event at the UWF Aquatic Center on Friday morning. Hundreds of children from Ensley, Lipscomb, Ferry Pass, and Scenic Heights schools learned the basics of water safety from instructors and volunteers. The event is part of a curriculum taught by the school district as required physical education for second-graders. It is hosted twice a year.

Fitness

UWF offers a variety of fitness and recreation activities. Students can participate in intramural sports, such as basketball and volleyball, or rent a bicycle for free.

The Aquatic Center, which houses a swimming pool and diving boards, is open to the UWF community and general public for leisure, fitness, and lap swimming opportunities. Guests under 16 are required to be accompanied by an adult. Parents and guardians may supervise a maximum of two under-aged swimmers during Family Recreational Swim Monday through Saturday. The UWF Aquatic Center also hosts water safety day events for second graders from the Escambia County School District. Last month, 450 students from Ensley, Lipscomb, Ferry Pass, and Scenic Heights went to the Aquatic Center to learn basic water safety skills. It could save their lives or someone else’s. The event is held twice a year. Besides swimming, the children also learned how to float and kick. The clinics are offered as part of the school’s physical education curriculum.

Special Events

The UWF Aquatic Center hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, from Homecoming to Wellness Week. These activities serve to enrich UWF students and enhance the campus community.

For instance, second graders from four Escambia County elementary schools get a chance to learn about the importance of water safety during the annual Water and Youth Safety Day event at the UWF Aquatic Center. The event is not meant to teach the youngsters how to swim, but rather to encourage them to “take the plunge” and learn about the basics of aquatic fitness.
