Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park

One of the most interesting parks in Pensacola, Florida, Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park offers a glimpse into the bayou habitat that is home to a number of rare plants and animals. It also contains four species of the endangered pitcher plant.

A roughly half-mile boardwalk winds across some of the wetlands. Other activities include picnicking, bird-watching, and geo-seeking.

Hiking Trails

If you love nature, you’ll want to visit Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park in Pensacola, Florida. This 4,000-acre park is home to more than 100 rare plant and animal species, including four endangered pitcher plants (Sarracenia leucophylla).

The ADA-accessible Tarkiln Bayou Trail runs half a mile through the prairie, cypress, and titi forests, offering stunning views of the bayou. It also ends with a picnic pavilion at Long Pond. This article

During spring, this trail will have spectacular blooms of white top pitcher plants. You’ll also find Chapman’s butterwort and other wildflowers.

This is a great spot for bird watching, too. You’ll have a chance to see brown-headed nuthatches, pine warblers, and yellow-breasted chats.

Carnivorous Plants

One of the most fascinating aspects of this wet prairie park is its collection of rare and exotic carnivorous plants. Among these are the white-top pitcher plant, the parrot plant, and the sweet pitcher plant (which is more colorful than it sounds).

This 4,290-acre preserve in northwest Florida also contains a half-mile-long boardwalk that winds through a wet prairie ecosystem. Several nature trails and a small pier are also located within the park.

The park is home to almost 100 rare plants and animals, including the alligator snapping turtle, the Chapman’s butterwort, and four endangered pitcher plants. The park also boasts a handful of other notable attractions.

Bird Watching

If you’re a bird lover, Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park is the perfect spot to enjoy a day of bird-watching. It’s home to a number of rare plants and animals, including four species of the white-top pitcher plant that only grows between the Apalachicola and Mississippi rivers.

The ADA-accessible half-mile Tarkiln Bayou Trail meanders through prairie, cypress, and titi forests to an observation area. The Perdido Bay Trail is a more difficult 6.5-mile trail that leads to beaches and weaves through oaks and pines. You and your dog may see some migratory birds, white-tailed deer, raccoons, or bobcats along the way!
